Optimal strouhal number for swimming animals
WebUsing Lighthill’s elongated-body theory to address undulatory propulsion, it is demonstrated here that the optimal Strouhal number increases from 0.15 to 0.8 for animals spanning … WebOct 23, 2024 · Of all the behaviors performed by animals in our dataset, transiting is most similar to the steady-state swimming performed by animals in controlled, laboratory and aquarium studies (Bainbridge, 1958; Fish and Rohr, 1999; Fish et al., 2014). This could explain why the Strouhal number for this individual fell so close to the theoretical optimum.

WebApr 15, 2004 · SUMMARY. Swimming efficiencies of fish and cetaceans have been related to a certain synchrony between stroke cycle frequency, peak-to-peak tail/fluke amplitude and mean swimming speed. These kinematic parameters form a non-dimensional wake parameter, referred to as a Strouhal number, which for the range between 0.20 and 0.40 …
